An upper endoscopy, or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a procedure used to examine the lining of the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Using a thin, flexible endoscope equipped with a camera, your gastroenterologist can examine the:

• Esophagus

• Stomach

• Duodenum, the first portion of the small intestine

An EGD can help your physician investigate symptoms, identify abnormalities and take tissue samples when necessary.

Your gastroenterologist may recommend an EGD to evaluate symptoms or conditions including:

• Persistent heartburn or acid reflux

• Difficulty or discomfort when swallowing

• Persistent upper abdominal pain

• Nausea or vomiting

• Gastrointestinal bleeding

• Unexplained anemia

• Suspected ulcers

• Inflammation of the upper digestive tract

• Other persistent upper GI symptoms

An upper endoscopy may also be used to monitor certain previously diagnosed gastrointestinal conditions.

An EGD gives your gastroenterologist a direct view of the upper digestive tract.

Depending on your symptoms and medical history, the procedure may help identify inflammation, ulcers, sources of bleeding, narrowing of the esophagus and other abnormalities.

Your gastroenterologist may also take a small tissue sample, or biopsy, during the procedure when appropriate.
